Job Description
Franklin County, PA is seeking a Chief Public Defender to administer a countywide legal program that protects the rights of indigent persons by providing quality representation and leadership in the criminal and juvenile justice systems.
A successful candidate will need to have a passion for Criminal Defense, enjoy helping individuals in challenging life situations, and be effective in a fast paced, sometimes high-pressure, environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Defend individuals and represent indigent criminal defendants before judges and juries
- Provide expert legal analysis and practical solutions for clients
- Provide leadership and management of a team of 11 employees
- Coordinate, assign and manage caseload and establish internal control procedures
- Prepare department budget and supervise expenditures in support of the office’s strategic initiatives
- Liaison with court administration, judges and other court representatives
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a public defender is preferred; meaningful courtroom and trial experience combined with education also considered
- Empathetic to clients and commitment to helping people solve challenging life problems
- Strong communication and presentation abilities
- Rule 801 certified preferred
- Knowledge of legal and policy issues affecting public defenders and their clients
- High degree of professionalism
- Self-motivated, intellectually curious with a strong work ethic
- Organized, team player who is considerate and able to work well with others Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills
- Possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License and willingness to travel as needed to complete job duties
- Skills and comfort using modern software technology to improve efficiency
