March Proclaimed as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in Franklin County

Franklin County Commissioners proclaimed March 2019 as Franklin County Developmental Disabilities Month.

Franklin County Commissioners proclaimed March 2019 as Franklin County Developmental Disabilities Month.

“We recognize the unlimited potential for all Franklin County citizens to live, work and thrive in our communities—including those with developmental disabilities,” said Commissioner Chairman Dave Keller.

The proclamation seeks to raise awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all areas of community life, as well as awareness to the barriers that people with disabilities still sometimes face in connecting to the communities in which they live.

The Franklin/ Fulton Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Program is using the theme, “Building on Our Potential” to show that all citizens, including those with disabilities, can be included in education, employment and community living.

Franklin County supports those with developmental disabilities to make their own decisions, live where and with whomever they choose, and receive the supports they need to be successful, productive and independent community members.

The following are some upcoming awareness activities:

March 18th - “Creating a Vision for a Good Life” family workshop at the Besore Library from 6-8 pm

March 20th - Transition Day for Franklin County High School students with disabilities at Wilson College

March 23rd - “Creating a Vision for Life After High School” workshop for families and students at the Alexander Hamilton Memorial Library from 1-3:30 pm

Occupational Services Inc. will hold a celebration for their employees and participants later this month to celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.
