Franklin County Veteran Affairs Office Seeking to Memorialize Deceased Veterans

April 28, 2016 - CHAMBERSBURG, PA –

Franklin County Veteran Affairs Office is seeking donations of flags of deceased veterans that were draped over their casket or urn during the veteran’s funeral, then folded and presented to the family.  These flags usually remain folded and placed somewhere safe, either displayed in families’ homes or packed away never to see the light of day again.

Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, PA has flagpoles designed to fly these flags, which are 5½ feet by 9 feet. Individual flags are not permitted on the graves at the cemetery. In lieu of the small individual grave flags, they display the Avenue of Flags, which provides a unique visible tribute to all of our Nation’s veterans. Families can donate their veteran family member’s casket or urn flag to Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, where they will fly that flag proudly between Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

Franklin County Veteran Affairs Office is currently collecting these flags from local families and will bring them to the cemetery in Annville before Memorial Day for display on the Avenue of Flags. Flags must be in good condition and must be a casket or urn flag due to the size specifications.  If anyone would like to donate their loved one’s casket or urn flag they can contact our office at (717) 263-4326 or stop by our office during business hours located at 425 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg, PA 17202. Certificates of appreciation will be given to families who donate flags. In order to receive the certificate of appreciation we will need to know the following information: 1) Name of the veteran the flag is in honor of, 2) Name of the person or family donating flag, 3) Address of person donating flag, and 4) Relationship of person donating flag to the veteran.
