Signs of Drug Abuse

There are many signs, both physical and behavioral, that indicate drug use. Each drug has its own unique manifestations but there are some general indications that a person is using drugs:

Drop in school grades

Truancy and/or absenteeism from work

Sudden change in friends

Legal problems

New interest in drug culture (e.g. drug related posters, music or magazines)

Evidence of drugs or drug paraphernalia (e.g., needles, pipes, rolling papers)

Lying and/or stealing

Lack of interest in personal appearance

Having more or less money than usual

Marked change in sleeping patterns (getting more or less sleep)

Loss of weight

Loss of interest in family activities

Hostile or argumentative attitude

Refusal or hostility when asked to talk about possible drug and alcohol use

Rapid speech coupled with loss of appetite and excessive thirst

Stolen or missing household property

Excessive mileage on vehicle

Memory loss

Fake ID (false driver's license indicating legal drinking age)

Smell of alcohol on their breath

Bloodshot eyes
