During its Sept. 30 public meeting, the Franklin County Board of Commissioners joined staff from WIN Victim Services in proclaiming October 2026 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Franklin County.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Franklin County Commissioners have proclaimed October 2026 to be Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Franklin County. In doing so, the commissioners are calling upon residents to recognize the critical work that advocates and allies are doing on behalf of domestic violence victims and survivors as well as their efforts to eliminate abuse.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month draws attention to the impact abuse can have on communities. According to national statistics, an average of 24 individuals are victims of domestic violence every minute. That adds up to more than 12 million men and women across the U.S. in a single year. Data also shows 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have experienced severe physical violence by a partner.

In 2024, 106 individuals in Pennsylvania died from domestic violence incidents, including one in Franklin County. Locally, over 1,900 calls are placed each year to the WIN Victim Services emergency helpline.

“Domestic violence doesn’t just affect one person — it impacts children, families and entire communities,” said Franklin County Commissioner Chairman Dean Horst. “All of us with Franklin County stand with organizations and partners across Pennsylvania and the country in supporting survivors, victims and the advocates who work so hard to help them.”

By recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Franklin County Commissioners are asking all residents, community leaders and other stakeholders to take a proactive approach to eradicating domestic violence and to support local efforts to raise awareness of the effects domestic violence has on their friends and neighbors.

WIN Victim Services encourages residents, organizations and other community stakeholders to wear purple on Oct. 15 – Purple Thursday – to show their solidarity and support for those impacted by domestic violence and their advocates.
