CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Franklin County Commissioners have proclaimed March to be American Red Cross Month in Franklin County. By doing so, the commissioners are celebrating the humanitarian spirit of American Red Cross volunteers in local communities and their commitment to ensuring no one faces a crisis alone.

In celebration of American Red Cross Month, the commissioners are recognizing the contributions of area Red Cross volunteers. In Franklin County, there are 24 volunteers who support the mission of the Red Cross by helping to provide emergency shelter, food and comfort to families affected by home fires or natural disasters; by donating blood for accident victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients; and by providing support to U.S. service members and veterans, along with their families and caregivers.

Since July, the Red Cross has responded to nine disaster events in Franklin County, supporting 54 individuals in their times of need. In that same timeframe, the organization collected 2,674 units of blood, installed over 120 free smoke alarms and provided assistance in 43 armed forces cases. In 2025, Red Cross volunteers in the 11-county Central Pennsylvania Chapter logged more than 198,000 hours of service.

“We know we can rely on the American Red Cross and its volunteers to be there in our time of need,” said Franklin County Commissioner Chairman Dean Horst. “Their selflessness and compassion are beyond compare. We are grateful for the work they do in our community, and all of us should strive to demonstrate the same level of kindness and humanity to each other every day.”

By recognizing American Red Cross Month, the Franklin County Commissioners are encouraging all residents to support the organization’s humanitarian mission through volunteerism, donating blood, learning life-saving skills or contributing to the organization financially.
