CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Franklin County Commissioners have emphasized the importance of keeping motorcyclists safe by declaring May to be Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in Franklin County.

Motorcycle riding is not just a favorite form of transportation; it is also a popular recreation activity across the commonwealth and throughout the U.S. Pennsylvania is home to nearly 790,000 licensed motorcyclists. With that many motorcyclists on the road, it is important that all motorists remember to share roads and highways responsibly for everyone’s safety. Likewise, motorcyclists can take advantage of free training courses through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) free Motorcycle Safety Program to improve their skills and ultimately reduce the number of motorcycle crashes and fatalities.

“While we formally recognize motorcycle safety in May, motorcycle safety is important to remember and practice at all times of the year,” said Franklin County Commissioner Chairman Dean Horst. “We’re pleased to stand alongside PennDOT, Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education of Pennsylvania (A.B.A.T.E.) and the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Dealers Association to recognize Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month as a way to promote and highlight the importance of keeping our motorcyclists safe on our roads, both in Franklin County and beyond.”

By recognizing Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in Franklin County, the commissioners are encouraging all residents to pay attention to motorcycles and to recognize the importance of staying alert, practicing safe driving techniques and promoting motorcycle safety.
