Archives & Records Management
January 30, 2026
WASHINGTON – The National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators (NAGARA) is pleased to announce that the County of Franklin, PA has been selected as the host institution for the 2026 NAGARA Internship Program.

This year’s call for host institutions generated the largest number of applications ever received for the NAGARA Internship Program, reflecting growing interest across the government archives and records community in mentoring and supporting emerging professionals. After careful review and thoughtful deliberation, the NAGARA Internship Subcommittee selected the County of Franklin, PA from a highly competitive pool of 10 applicants.
The NAGARA Internship Program is an important initiative of the association, designed to support and develop the next generation of government archivists and records professionals. Launched in 2020, the program provides a paid, hands-on internship that offers students and emerging professionals meaningful, real-world experience working with government archives and records while contributing lasting value to a host institution. Since its inception, NAGARA has awarded $11,500 in paid internship funding to five student interns, reflecting the association’s sustained investment in building pathways into the profession.
For 2026, the intern hosted by the County of Franklin will work closely with Franklin County’s Archives and Records Management staff on the processing and description of historically significant county records. The internship will involve hands-on work with large-format tax maps and aerial photographs, including research into their creation and use in county government, the development of organizational tools to improve discovery and access, and the creation of descriptive metadata and finding aids geared toward public users. The internship will include assisting in digitization efforts, public outreach activities, and documentation that helps make these records more accessible to researchers and the broader community.
In addition to project-based work, the intern will gain exposure to the full scope of a county archives and records management program through mentorship, shadowing opportunities and interaction with staff supporting records preservation, access and public service. The experience is designed to support professional skill-building while allowing the intern to complete a discrete body of work suitable for inclusion in a professional portfolio.
NAGARA extends its sincere thanks to all institutions that applied to host the 2026 Internship Program.
