CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Each October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month honors the contributions of workers with disabilities and highlights the ongoing barriers that continue to prevent many individuals from fully participating in the workforce. For over 10 years, Franklin/Fulton Mental Health/Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities/Early Intervention (MH/IDD/EI) has partnered with AHEDD, a nonprofit supporting individuals with disabilities, to help students and young adults explore careers and build independent futures. Through AHEDD’s Transition to Adult Life Services (TALS) program, participants discover their strengths, interests and goals, and are connected with real employment opportunities within the community.

TALS focuses on self-determination, independent living and career exploration. Rather than placing students in jobs right away, the program helps them learn about different workplaces, narrow down their interests and connect with supports like the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) when they’re ready for next steps.
The program welcomes participants of any age who have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and are able to meet with staff. Most individuals begin between ages 14 and 16, but eligibility for the program remains while in school through age 21. There is no cost to individuals who participate as funding for this partnership is made possible through the Franklin County Human Services Block Grant.
Over the years, TALS has built strong partnerships with local employers, including Pete and Gerry’s Organic Eggs, Giant Food Stores, and others, leading to many success stories for young adults entering the workforce.
The partnership between Franklin County and AHEDD remains a vital bridge for young people with disabilities transitioning from school into adulthood, helping them gain confidence, skills and meaningful employment within their community.
